From February 11 to 17, 2026, the charming isle of Carriacou in Grenada will burst into celebration with its storied Carriacou Carnival, also known as “Kayak Mas”. Set against the island’s laid-back pace and framed by its African, French, and English heritage, this pre-Lenten festival blends music, masquerade, tradition, and theatrical flair.
Over the course of six days, revelers experience a deeply authentic cultural expression: J’ouvert-style early-morning dances, “Jab Jab” masqueraders draped in black oil, elegant Fancy Mas parades, and the uniquely Carriacou “Shakespeare Mas,” where costumed participants recite Shakespeare’s lines in playful duels – with blunders met by gentle taps from opponents’ sticks. Big Drum performances—a traditional Carriacou dance form rooted in West African ancestry—resound across village squares, honoring lineage and community through hypnotic rhythm.
Street bands play calypso, steel pan, and masquerade tunes while vendors offer local delicacies, rum punches, artisan crafts, and island hospitality. The Monday Night Mas features a spectacular finale of color and revelry, closing out the week in high-spirited fashion.
Carriacou Carnival draws both locals and visitors who yearn for a genuine, less commercialized island carnival experience. Whether you’re here for the music, the pageantry, or to witness the Shakespeare Mas, this celebration is a rare and beautiful fusion of tradition, community, and joyous performance.
