Maskanoo is the biggest event in the Turks and Caicos Islands held annually, that comes alive on Boxing Day – the day after Christmas. It is a celebration of the islands’ rich history and unique culture, a commemoration of the island’s West African and Caribbean heritage which developed from 19th Century slaves celebrating Christmas by mocking the wealthy’s costume balls.
Maskanoo is a combination of “Mas” or Carnival and Junkanoo. The event is held in Grace Bay on the island of Providenciales and features the sounds of cowbells and revellers rushing, cultural activities, music and vendors serving up local authentic food and drinks. The night ends with a beautiful display of fireworks.
