Blog

The Caribbean pulsates with a rhythm all its own and nowhere is that energy more electrifying than during carnival season. Forget the confines of a nightclub; in a Caribbean carnival, the entire island becomes your dance floor. Witness a sea of humanity swaying in unison on the streets, adorned in costumes that push the boundaries of imagination, and find yourself grooving along, surrounded by a flurry of feathers, sequins, and towering creations transforming wearers into fantastical creatures.

But beyond the spectacle and in the heart of carnival in the Caribbean is a vibrant tapestry of cultures. For many Caribbean islands, carnival originated after the abolition of slavery and became a way for formerly enslaved people to express their joy, newfound freedom, and cultural identity through music, dance, and vibrant costumes. Caribbean carnivals also serve as platforms for showcasing and celebrating the Caribbean islands’ rich cultural heritage, including African, European, and indigenous influences that have blended over centuries. Music, dance styles, costumes, and traditions specific to each island take center stage during carnival celebrations in the Caribbean.

There are as many carnivals as there are islands in the region and the Caribbean offers a carnival for every soul. Whether you seek the electrifying energy of St. Lucia’s grand kaleidoscope of fetes or the laid-back charm of the British Virgin Islands’ Emancipation Festival, there’s a celebration waiting to embrace you. Below, Caribbean Events has listed six exciting Caribbean carnivals happening over the summer.
