Annual National Family Island Regatta

From April 23 to 26, 2025, the crystalline waters of Elizabeth Harbour in George Town, Exuma, will host the 69th Annual National Family Island Regatta—an iconic celebration of Bahamian maritime heritage and one of the Caribbean’s most captivating cultural experiences.

Launched in 1954, this is the longest-running and most highly attended sailing regatta in The Bahamas. Sailors from across the archipelago compete in handcrafted sloops, categorized from Class A to E and measuring between 28 and 12 feet, vying for the esteemed title of “Best in the Bahamas.”

These vessels, meticulously constructed using age-old techniques, embody the nation’s rich boat-building legacy. In a world where high-tech sailing dominates, these wooden boats—with canvas sails and no electronic instruments—are a refreshing throwback and attract sailing purists from around the globe who value the raw skill and tradition on display.

The event is more than a race; it’s a multi-day cultural immersion. As the sloops slice through turquoise waters, onshore celebrations erupt with vibrant sounds and colors with musical concerts headlined by top bahamian artists, art and craft exhibits, and a sampling of the Bahamas best dishes.

For travelers seeking an immersive cultural experience combined with the allure of competitive sailing, the Annual National Family Island Regatta is an unmissable event.
